How Do You Build Self Control?

Self control. Have we forgotten this virtue? It has become unpopular to mention in polite society, but self control is the only way to become successful at any endeavor. Weight loss is not possible without self control. I know all the diet books tell us it isn't our fault if we don't succeed, but that's only because they want to sell more products. Success in life is not possible without self control at some point in the process. The media today resists old proven patterns of behavior that we would do well to take a second look at. Do you really believe your last diet failed you, or did you fail the diet?

The reason most of us fail is because we don't believe we are able to stick with the diet in the first place. Over a lifetime of failures, we build up a mind set that it's impossible to stick to a diet. Believing that... we are a failure before we begin. We can reverse this process by changing what we believe, but, at the same time we have to build trust in ourselves. We must do this in baby steps though... just as the child learning to walk, we must build up our belief that we are capable of success. Make a promise to yourself and keep it. Commit to a thirty minute walk for three days per week, then a jog... then a run, until your belief system starts functioning in your favor for a change.

If it is to be, it's up to me! There is more truth in those words than most people want to believe. How can we find motivation, if we don't get it from within ourselves? Well, the fact is, you can't. No matter how many self help books you read, or motivational tapes you listen to, if you don't learn to motivate yourself, you will have little success in life. Examine your self talk and self imagery. Work on changing that which is not beneficial to you. Affirmations may help in a temporary way, but actually reversing negative patterns of thought is what's necessary. Keeping promises to yourself builds up self trust and confidence. Combine that with your new mental programming and your life will change rapidly!
